Every jewelry store in America teaches buyers the 4 C’s: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat. They’re presented as equal pillars when buying. But when you’re selling, the picture looks completely different.

The 4 C’s: A Quick Refresher

  • Cut — How well the diamond is shaped and faceted. Affects brilliance. Graded Excellent to Poor.
  • Color — How colorless the diamond is. Graded D (colorless) to Z (light yellow).
  • Clarity — Internal inclusions or surface blemishes. Graded FL (flawless) to I3.
  • Carat — The weight of the diamond. 1 carat = 0.2 grams.

Carat Weight — The One That Drives Everything

When it comes to resale, carat weight is king. It’s the most objective measurement and the factor that most directly determines what a buyer will pay. Diamonds don’t scale linearly — a 2-carat diamond isn’t twice as valuable as a 1-carat diamond, it’s often four to six times more valuable because large diamonds are exponentially rarer.

Price jump points: 0.50ct, 1.00ct, 1.50ct, 2.00ct — each triggers a significant premium.

Cut — Important for Beauty, Less So for Resale

Cut quality dramatically affects how a diamond looks, but for resale purposes it matters less than you’d think. An Excellent cut commands a small premium over Very Good, but the difference is much smaller in the resale market than at retail.

Color — Second Most Important for Sellers

  • D–F (Colorless): Command the highest premiums
  • G–J (Near Colorless): Very good resale value — the sweet spot
  • K–M (Faint Yellow): Visible tint significantly hurts value
  • N and below: Primarily commodity value

Clarity — Usually the Least Important for Sellers

Eye-clean diamonds (VS2 and above) all trade in a similar range. The difference between VS1 and SI1 is much smaller in the resale market than the retail price difference suggests. Unless you have a Flawless or Internally Flawless diamond, clarity has less impact on your offer than carat weight and color.

Does a GIA Certificate Help?

Yes — it documents the 4 C’s independently and removes uncertainty. When a buyer doesn’t need to do their own grading, they can offer with more confidence, which can translate to a better price for you. Bring any certificates you have. If you don’t have one, bring the diamond anyway — we grade on-site.
